Born in Kansas, U.S.A. and based in Chicago for many years, Matt Long moved to Berlin in February 2020. Since arriving in Berlin he has worked as music leader of The Ballery, a queer art gallery/performance venue in Nollendorfkiez, and together with Ballery Director Simon Williams, Matt co-founded TransVision which broadcast for the first time in May 2020. Matt is also pianist, composer and arranger for the vocal ensemble Die Göldvogel. He has written arrangements for the group Mo’Voce and the American soprano Sarai Cole. He has also performed as a solo pianist in recital at The Ballery and as part of Classic Meets Fetish. Most recently he joined the ORSO Symphony Orchestra and Chorus for a concert of film music at the Berlin Philharmonie.

Matt graduated with highest distinction from Northwestern University’s School of Music in Evanston, Illinois with a Bachelor’s degree in music theory and composition. He served for 12 years as Assistant Conductor/Pianist for the 100 voice choir of the Chicago production of Too Hot to Handel: the Jazz-Gospel Messiah. He was also music director, arranger, and pianist for Songs of a Dream, the show featuring the voices and story of Too Hot to Handel’s own Rodrick Dixon and Alfreda Burke.

Matt appeared on stage with the Joffrey Ballet in performances of the Philip Glass score for In Creases, and was rehearsal pianist for the world premiere production of Christopher Wheeldon’s Nutcracker in 2016. In 2013, he wrote arrangements for The Joffrey Ballet’s winter fundraiser What is This Thing Called Love featuring Shelley MacArthur.

In 2015 Matthew released his first solo CD titled Love’s the Greatest Beauty, a collection of Spirituals arranged in jazz-gospel styles. In 2017 he released a follow-up album Wouldn’t Change a Stroke: Matt Long Band plays the music of Prince.

2015 veröffentlichte Matthew seine erste Solo-CD mit dem Titel „Love’s the Greatest Beauty“, eine Sammlung von Spirituals, die im Jazz-Gospel-Stil arrangiert wurden. 2017 veröffentlichte er ein Nachfolgealbum „Wouldn’t Change a Stroke: Matt Long Band spielt die Musik von Prince“.
