Poems in my Hand is an adaptation of Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder created by American Soprano Sarai Cole and stage director Mary Kelly. Matt Long created new arrangements for piano and string quartet of Wagner’s music specifically for this project.
“Wesendonck Project: Poems in my hand” is an opera play that wrestles with the story of belonging “as a woman, in the world as an American Descendant Of Slavery, in my own family, in opera….” It is dark but somehow defiantly hopeful just like Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder.

Poems in my Hand ist eine Adaption von Wagners Wesendonck Liedern, die von der amerikanischen Sopranistin Sarai Cole und der Regisseurin Mary Kelly geschaffen wurde. Matt Long hat speziell für dieses Projekt neue Arrangements für Klavier und Streichquartett von Wagners Musik bearbeitet.
“Wesendonck Project: Poems in my hand” ist ein Opernstück, das mit der Geschichte der Zugehörigkeit “als Frau, in der Welt als amerikanische Nachkommerin der Sklaverei, in meiner eigenen Familie, in der Oper …” ringt. Es ist dunkel aber irgendwie trotzig hoffnungsvoll wie Wagners Wesendonck-Lieder.
